This week, we were assigned a project. Where we got to pick a piece of media to analyze using Mise En Scène.

Since my favorite show of all time is 9-1-1 and I have rewatched it several times, it would only be right to pick it! At the beginning of each season, they have “opening emergencies” where big natural disasters occur. The one I ended up picking, was obviously my favorite! Season Three: Sink or Swim and The Searchers. If you could not guess the emergency by the title, it is based of a Tsunami hitting Los Angeles. The Clip I picked is when one of the protagonists Eddie, reunites with his Son Christopher after being lost due to the Tsunami. See Clip below….

We were assigned these questions to analyze the scene and develop a case study:

• What Mood and/or atmosphere is created?
• How are the characters represented?
• How are the audience encouraged to response to the characters?
• How is Mise En Scène used to provide narrative information?

I have watched 9-1-1 multiple times, but I have never stopped to think about all the things that go on behind the scenes to make this show happen. Within the last few minutes of the opening emergency, you can one of the main characters “Buck” the opposite from his bright and funny self. He is shown to be in distress and covered in blood, in the scene his injuries look severe, which they were; he was still willing to go out and look for Christopher. Showing how much Buck cares for Eddie’s son.

The dark light reflects the seriousness of the scene, how Buck has been looking for him all day. His outfit being all cut up and covered and blood reflect just how much Buck has been through during the tsunami. The costuming shows the view the extent of the situation and makes them worry for Christopher.

I really do love the show 9-1-1! It utilizes the use of Mise En Scène in the best way possible, it connects the viewers to the show in such a brilliant way! This project got me really excited to keep learning about media. Mise En Scène alone shows how much goes into a film!
